Description
ENAMELLED STONEWARE VASE BY NICOLAS DAVIO, GAIA COLLECTION
The Gaia collection is inspired by the artist’s travels to Iceland.
There he finds a land offering contrasts between the deep blacks of basaltic rock, the blues of glaciers and icebergs and the green of lichens.
For him, the clay he manipulates restores all these forms of minerality, these materials in permanent transformation.
It is in his workshop that he likes to create with this changing material.
He uses high temperature clay (fired at 1280 °) such as stoneware or porcelain to create his pieces that he turns or models.
His favorite forms are simple. He likes them round, ovoid or oblong.
But this simplicity is misleading. Nicolas loves abstraction and it is with enamel that he expresses it.
He approaches enamelling in a pictorial way. He plays with the thicknesses and the combination of manufacturing techniques.
The enamelled stoneware vase that we present here is the reflection of his creative process: relationship between form, surface and color.
